Clutch wins show promise for Minnesota Timberwolves this season

Four out of five Minnesota Timberwolves wins were by a margin of three points or fewer.

Currently sitting at 5-3 Timberwolves are riding a three game winning streak. The buzz to their hot start has been their clutch play to close out games. Whether it was coming out on top in their neck-and-neck battles with Oklahoma City Thunder including the game Andrew Wiggins hit the buzzard beater, Timberwolves winning in overtime in Miami or Jamal Crawford hitting the go-ahead three in the home opener against Utah Jazz. While the season is still young these were situations past year squads would rarely come out victorious.

“First off [we got to] stop making so many games exciting for the fans. We got to find a way to finish our opponent early,” Karl-Anthony Towns told Fox Sports North after defeating the Heat in overtime, Monday.

After Friday’s practice Towns reminisced a little more about the season.

“What we can takeaway is that we can execute when the game comes in the clutch,” Towns told reporters after practice. “We’ve had all our wins in clutch moments. It just shows we can pull games out at the end.”

Being clutch isn’t the only advantage this team has going for them, its depth.

With Towns only scoring two points and Jeff Teague limited to five in Wednesday’s 104-98 win over the New Orleans Pelicans, the bench stepped up. The entire bench scored 45 with Gorgui Dieng and Nemanja Bjelica adding 12 points a piece and Crawford with 11.

“We have a lot of depth and we feel very comfortable at anytime with any of them on the court,” Towns said. “We’re 5-3. If you can promise me a 55-win season…I don’t care if I go out there and get 0 points, 2 rebounds and a steal. As long as we come out with a ‘W’…statistics are nothing without the rings.”

This upcoming weekend Timberwolves have a back-to-back home court stretch where they will play the NBA’s worse Dallas Mavericks, Saturday, and the Charlotte Hornets, Sunday.

Seeking to continue their hot streak they can achieve their first four game winning streak in five years.
