Cam Newton apologizes after facing backlash for his response during a Wednesday press conference.

When Newton was asked a question by a female reporter during a Wednesday press conference he laughed at the podium and said it was funny hearing a female ask a question about routes. Reporter Jourdan Rodrigue took offense to it and later Newton was scrutinized by ESPN and other outlets for his word choice as it was labeled a “sexiest” comment. He also lost an endorsement with Dannon.

The instance was taken out of context but word selection could have been better, Newton revealed in an apology video he posted on Twitter Thursday.

The father of two daughters is a firm believer that women could be what they inspire and had no intention on disrespecting women.

“After careful thought I understand that my word choice was extremely degrading and disrespectful to women, and to be honest that was not my intentions. If you are a person that took offence to what I said I sincerely apologize to you,” Newton said. “I’m a man who tries to be a positive role model in my community and tries to use my platform to inspire others and I take ownership to everything that comes with that.

“I’m a father to two beautiful daughters and at their age I try to instill in them that they can do and be anything that that want to be.”

Through this situation Newton has already been punished.

“During this whole process I already lost sponsors and countless fans. I realize that the joke is really on me and I learned a valuable lesson from this,” Newton said.

He ended the video asking for young people to learn from his mistake and be better than him and sent out one last apology to all the females out their.

“I hope that you can find the kindness in your heart to forgive me,” Newton said.
