One of the most iconic things about the 80s hit TV show Miami Vice was the tunes.

In addition to the fashion, colors and Ferraris that Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) and Ricardo Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas) rolled in, the music elevated the show. While it was the first show on television to play regular soundtrack hits, the scoring and theme song created by Jan Hammer helped turn Miami Vice to an iconic sensation.

The Czech born American musician, composer and record producer was given the freedom by Michael Mann to create the tunes he felt best matched each episode.  On a weekly basis he delivered and it’s what one of the features that led the show to reach the heights it had.

Hammer turns 69 today.
