Shots Fired premieres prime time tonight on FOX.
Starring Sanaa Lathan (The Best Man Holiday & Love & Basketball) and Mack Wilds (The Wire & The Breaks) FOX introduces a new 10-episode drama titled Shots Fired. Inspired by the Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman case, this show explores a full picture of police involved shooting cases revealing the aftermath of two scenarios. Promoting the show co-stars Lathan and Wilds appeared on ABC’s The View Monday, March 20.
“It is entertainment and it is fun to watch. It is a mystery thriller where you will be putting the pieces together,” Lathan said. “Then you get hit with these heavy, heavy truths.”
Ashe Akino (Lathan), an investigator with the Department of Justice, is investigating the murder of a white kid who was murdered by a black cop Deputy Joshua Beck (Wilds). While investigating the case Ashe discovers there’s been a black teenager who was murdered that’s not being investigated. When the investigator who pushes the envelope even if it means breaking the law to provide justice, anything goes when she discovers this unheard murder case.
The show was “brilliantly” created as it balances the many people involved in the scenario, says Lathan.
“You get a seat from every position at the table, so hopefully, hopefully, that will create some empathy and some compassion,” Lathan said. “You’re gonna put yourself in shoes where you may have never thought you [would] have been [in].”
Playing a detective on the show has changed the way Wilds views policeman. Coming from Staten Island, New York he, and other people he knew, would automatically get defensive when interacting with police officers, says Wilds. Since a young age his parents taught him about how police see black men threatening and to be cautious if he encounter police in his daily routine.
“After doing the rigorous training and meeting with the police officers and understanding their point of view and seeing how just as scared as we are walking into those situations they are just as nervous,” Wilds said.
This well rounded perspective thriller has Whoopi Goldberg excited and hoping people watch the show with their family’s.
“It’s a great thing and I’m so thrilled that y’all are doing it,” Goldberg said.
