David Rockefeller dies at age 101

David Rockefeller passed away Monday morning in his home at age 101.

Before his death Rockefeller was the eldest member in the wealthy family. The American banker was the chairman and chief executive of Chase Manhattan Corporation reportedly worth up to $3.3 billion. Before creating his own legacy he was the grandchild of John D. Rockefeller who founded Standard Oil Company. Growing up living in the largest residence at the time, Rockefeller made sure he was dedicated to philanthropy.

In Rockefeller’s lifetime he gave away over $900 million, according to insidephilanthropy.com. He’s donated over $250 million to his alma matter Harvard University, 1,000 acres of land on his 100th birthday to a nonprofit national park in Maine and to other places such as a museum and global development fund.

The man who spurred the original World Trade Center was awarded for his philanthropy work receiving the highest civilian honor in 1998, a Presidential Medal of Freedom.
