And the Academy Award for Best Motion Picture goes to La La Land…no, it’s Moonlight.

Sunday the 2017 Academy Awards concluded with a sloppy transaction that delayed Moonlight’s celebration and shocked the cast and crew of La La Land. Presenting the award for Best Motion Picture was the former Bonnie and Clyde (1967) couple Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway.

After going through the usual spiel when it was time to announce the winner, Beatty paused. He giggled and Dunaway told him “you’re a mess.” Showing Dunaway the card she read “La La Land.”

A thankful La La Land crew gave thanks to all who helped them win an award they thought they won. After bloviating on stage word eventually got to the film’s producer Jordan Horowitz.

“There’s a mistake, Moonlight you’ve won best picture,” Horowitz said. “This is not a joke. Come up here.”

While the cast and crew of the real winners were taking the stage Beatty used the microphone to explain the transaction. After opening the envelope the card read Emma Stone for La La Land, says Beatty. That caused him to pause and chuckle when he was on stage, sensing something may be off.

“That’s why I took such a long look at Faye and you,” Beatty said. “I wasn’t trying to be funny.”

During Anthony Anderson’s After Party special on ABC an interview revealed that Emma Stone had her envelope the whole time. She was honored for Best Actress right before the announcement for Best Motion Picture.

Stone first said she had her envelope the whole time and later said her publicist backstage held it for her. So how does Beatty end up having her award listed in his envelope?

“I have no idea how that happened,” Stone said. “I am so happy Moonlight won Best Picture…as far as I’m concerned it’s all wonderful.”

Anderson instigated on his show it’s a conspiracy even after Jimmy Kimmel explained to him what Beatty told him.

“He was confused because the card he shown to me said ‘Emma Stone La La Land,’” Kimmel told Anderson.

Rather than show Faye the card Anderson is curious as to why Beatty went along with it.

“Why not ask for help?” Anderson said.

Whatever the case is, this conclusion created another wrinkle to the 89th Academy Awards that will be a memorable moment for years to come, along with the record nominations for African American actors and films.
